Matilda Dixon

As an emerging artist based in Melbourne, I, Matilda Dixon, work primarily in oil paint and mixed media.

My work explores the way I remember places and people, and how those memories can become more beautiful over time. I paint bright, colourful and romanticised versions of my experiences, while questioning what gets hidden, forgotten or left out.

Raised in the Dandenong Ranges of Victoria, I am drawn to personal histories, local environments and the stories embedded within everyday life. I’m interested in the strange, hidden and sometimes problematic moments that shape us, as well as the quiet beauty we often don’t appreciate until it is gone.

I am interested in why we choose to remember beauty, even when there is more going on underneath it. Do I paint beauty because it means something to me, or because it is easier to look at?

Currently undertaking a Bachelor of Fine Arts, I continue to investigate how moments, places and relationships can be preserved, transformed and reimagined through paint.
